Home Fires follows a group of inspirational women in a rural English community where the shadow of World War II is casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn’t feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. The first season had a consolidated average rating of 6.2 million viewers to date and a 24 per-cent share. June 2015, ITV announced that it had ordered a second season of the programme. Samantha Bond was nominated for an award from the Satellite Awards. Season 2 met with similar success compared with Season 1 as the premiere episode gained 5.2 million overnight views, with the second episode reaching 4.7 million views.
Steph is concerned by Stan’s behavior on the farm. The Brindsleys make a disturbing discovery, and there’s joyful news in the Campbell house. In the final episode of the first series, Bob leaves for London, leaving Pat relieved and happy to be away from him, whilst Joyce leaves for the coast. She speaks with Frances over the war effort and hands over the keys to her tennis courts so that they may be used for food production. As the series finishes the final scene hints at the war taking its toll in Great Paxford. Dr Campbell finds he has lung cancer, preventing him from enlisting.

The Czech officers organise a dance to keep morale up as the Battle of Britain intensifies. Joyce has some advice for Sarah which is not well-received, while Pat realises that somebody knows about her relationship with Marek. Allison's secret work for the police leaves her forced to decide where her loyalties lie. Steph fears that Stan is becoming a bad influence on his son, and Frances finds out that Peter's affair was more complicated than she thought. Steph’s husband Stan is on leave from the military, and while she and her son are initially joyous, she soon registers a dark paranoia that has grown in the soldier.

Pat is tempted by her feelings for Marek while Bob is in hospital. Steph is delighted when Stan returns home on leave, but the reunion is overshadowed by his fears of invasion. Frances discovers a secret at the reading of the will. Steph fins it hard to deal with the work required during harvest time. Sarah ends up in a dangerous situation, whilst Teresa has a huge decision to make. A newcomer to the village causes friction between Sarah and Frances.
Cookie is kind and worries for the WI when it becomes corrupt and selfish under Joyce's rule. However, she shows a lot of happiness when Frances takes over and happily supports the newly reformed WI's movements. A drama set in a rural British village just prior to and during World War II.

Eventually she confronts him and tells him to go, as he is gradually tearing himself apart over this decision. Later Teresa reveals herself to Alison as a lesbian. Initially Alison is shocked but she overcomes her initial shock and reassures Teresa that she wants her to stay as Teresa has become her best friend.
She makes every effort to keep him happy, but remains with him out of fear, lying about and making apologies for his behavior. Spencer takes a fancy to Claire after coming to her rescue in a bicycling accident. Joyce is a pillar of the community, and the historical leader of the Great Paxford Women's Institute. Joyce is sophisticated and serene, and even her ex-nemesis Frances observes that she is a natural leader.
Pat and Marek are reconciled, but when someone sees them together, their relationship is in more danger than ever. The Brindsleys come to realise the full extent of David's injuries becomes apparent, and Teresa faces letting go of the past when she is asked out. Alison fears the consequences of her involvement with the Lyons, Laura is spurred into action by some happy news, and Joyce and Erica work together on a first aid meeting.
He begins hiding loaded guns around the property, can’t sleep for fear of bombing, and trains Stanley Jr. to defend the farm. His militant attitude frightens Steph, who fears that Stan is cultivating brutality and a dangerous dread in their son. Staying sane and level-headed is difficult when the pressure is palpable. His friends and neighbors almost unilaterally begin to vilify and torment him. A mob gathers and coats his bicycle, which he uses to deliver the post, with blood and chicken feathers.
With Frances devastated by Peter’s death, someone else must temporarily take over as president. She has returned to Great Paxford, taking lodging by herself in a “poky little” place on the outskirts of the town – it seems she is having marital difficulties. To the consternation of much of the Institute, she becomes president once again, although Sarah emphasizes that it’s only short-term.
In the face of Marek’s impending departure, Pat has a big decision to make, but Bob has one last trick up his sleeve to thwart her plans. While Frances fights to clear her name after the closure of the factory, Alison continues to wrestle with her conscience. Meanwhile, a chance encounter with Noah on the street leads Joyce to do some investigating of her own.
